2016 - Maratona dles Dolomites Day1

After the riding, Milano - Sanremo and the Vosges in 2015 I started to think about what challenge I would like to do in 2016. I was thinking about the Ötztaler Radmaraton or the Maratona dles Dolomites. As it would be my first mountainous granfondo, I decided to go with the lesser of two evils. So Oktober 2015, I registered for the lottery of the Maratona.

Completely forgetting that the draw had been, mid-November I received a message from a friend, congratulating me to the entry of the Maratona. I had been one of the lucky 5000 of 31.000 that had won the draw.

Shame was that some other friends were not selected. So, I had to find a hotel for myself.

Quickly I found a hotel called Maso Weber, which was a dependance of the Hotel Royal in Corvara. Corvara is where the Maratona finishes, so the location was ideal. Only few km's from the start. The price of the hotel was really good, considering that it was for the Maratona week.

Shortly after I found the hotel, a friend of mine, Vince, agreed to join me for the stay in Corvara, even though he would not participate in the Maratona. He would join me in the pre-rides and have a big ride himself on the Saturday before the Maratona.

Looking at the Datasport start list, I found out that another rider from Hulsberg also was riding the Maratona. So, I contacted Guido and we did some training rides together beforehand. Guido was going to ride with 2 other friends, so we agreed to meet up in Corvara, where they were also staying.

Thursday 30-06-2016 departure

In the early morning we, Vince and I, departed towards Corvara. After a nice road trip through Germany, Austria and Italy, we arrived around 14:00 in Corvara.

We quickly checked in to The Maso Weber/Hotel Royal. The Maso Weber was only 100m away from the Hotel Royal, and as we found out, just in front of the finish of the Maratona. It was located perfectly. Breakfast and Dinners were perfect. The food was of outstanding quality. Also check my review on TripAdvisor.
